How does a walkingfloor trailer work?
A walkingfloor trailer has a hydraulically operated floor consisting of long, movable floor slats. These slats move forwards and backwards in groups. Through a repeated sequence of movements, the cargo is gradually moved towards the rear of the trailer.
The driver operates the system while the trailer remains level. The cargo is discharged in a controlled manner without the need for a crane or tipping mechanism. This makes the system suitable for Austrian recycling facilities, warehouses and other locations with limited overhead clearance.
Efficient unloading and large loading volumes with a walkingfloor trailer
In international bulk transport, the amount of material you can carry per trip matters. At the same time, you want to avoid unnecessary waiting times caused by limited unloading space or the need for additional equipment.
A walkingfloor trailer offers several advantages:
- Up to approximately 92 m³ loading volume: suitable for bulky material streams.
- Unloading without tipping: the trailer remains level, reducing the overhead clearance required.
- Controlled unloading: the moving floor gradually discharges the material.
- Versatile applications: suitable for various loose bulk materials and certain types of packaged cargo.
- Short unloading times: depending on the cargo, unloading takes approximately 5 to 15 minutes on average.
The loading volume of a walkingfloor trailer is particularly useful for large quantities of wood residues, plastic waste and other relatively lightweight bulk materials. For heavier materials, we assess whether the permitted payload is sufficient.

- Waste and recycling materials: paper, cardboard, plastics and sorted residual waste.
- Refuse-derived and solid recovered fuels: RDF and SRF for suitable processing facilities.

What should you consider when transporting goods to Austria?
Most road transport from the Netherlands to Austria passes through Germany. The route and transport schedule depend on the destination and applicable transport regulations.
For walkingfloor transport to Austria, we take the following factors into account:
- Road tolls: trucks with a technically permissible maximum laden mass of over 3.5 tonnes are subject to the distance-based GO toll on applicable Austrian roads.
- Driving restrictions: restrictions apply on Saturday afternoons, Sundays, public holidays and during certain night-time hours.
- Regional regulations: additional restrictions for heavy goods vehicles apply in certain regions, including Tyrol.
- Waste shipments: the European Waste Shipment Regulation determines which documents and authorisations are required. Revised rules have applied since 21 May 2026, including digital procedures through DIWASS.
At DTC, we take these regulations and the requirements of loading and unloading locations into account. This allows us to prepare transport to Austria carefully and reduce the risk of delays.
